Bodhisattva Vow

It is with very great pleasure that I post this Bodhisattva Vow Ceremony. I have checked the translation to the best of my ability and it is accurate as far as I can tell within the limits of reasonable translation.  It is best to recite it in Tibetan to reflect its original meaning as far as possible, while contemplating its English interpretation.

It is best for anyone who has taken the Bodhisattva vows to recite this Ceremony everyday in front of a support like Buddha statue, text or stupa etc. Or if not, just by visualising Buddha Shakyamuni and countless Buddhas and Bodhisattvas in the space in front of you and taking this vow.  Retaking the vow constantly will increase one’s commitment towards Bodhichitta, restore the vow from any violations or downfalls, and receive the blessings of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas for continual progress on the path. 

You can recite the Ceremony after reciting the seven-branch prayers whether in the short form or in the longer form from the Samantabhadra Aspiration Prayer (in the Avatamsaka sutra) which I will post up here shortly too.

Bodhisattva Vow Ceremony

CHOG CHU NA ZHUG PAY SANG GYE CHOM DAN DAY THAM CHED DANG
All Buddhas, Transcendent Victors, residing in the ten directions,

SA CHU LA NAY PAY JANG CHUB SEM PA SEM PA CHEN PO NAM DANG
All the Bodhisattva Mahasattvas who dwell on the tenth bhumi,

LAMA DOR JE DZIN PA CHEN PO NAM
All the great Vajra-holder Masters

DAG LA GONG SU SOL
Please turn your attention towards me!

(recite once)

JANG CHUB NYING POR CHI KYI BAR
Until the heart of enlightenment is realized

SANG GYE NAM LA KYAB SU CHI
I take refuge in all the Buddhas,

CHO DANG JANG CHUB SEM PA YI
In the Dharma and the Bodhisattvas,

TSOG LANG DE ZHIN KYAB SU CHI
As well as their assemblies, similarly I go for refuge!

(three times)

JI TAR NGON GYI DE SHEG KYI
Just as the Sugatas of the past

JANG CHUB THUG NI KYED PA DANG
have aroused the Awakened Mind of Bodhicitta,

JANG CHUB SEM PAY LAB PA LA
(and in) the precepts of the Bodhisattvas,

DE DAG RIM ZHIN NAY PA TAR
(have) progressively abided according to them.

DE ZHIN DROL LA PHEN DON DU
Similarly, for the purpose of benefitting beings,

JANG CHUB SEM NI KYED GYI ZHING
I generate the Awakened mind of Bodhichitta,

DE ZHIN DU NI LAB PA LANG
In the same way, in these precepts too,

RIM PA ZHIN DU LAB PAR GYI
I shall learn and train in them progressively.

(recite three times to receive the Bodhisattva vows)

DENG DU DAG TSHE DRE BU YOD
Now, this life is fruitful

MI YI SID PA LEG PAR THOB
This human birth has been well obtained.

DE RING SANG GYE RIG SU KYE
Today I am born into the lineage of the Buddhas.

SANG GYE SEY SU DA GYUR TO
I have become a son of the Buddha (Bodhisattva).

DA NI DAG GI CHI NAY KYANG
From now on, I must by all means

RIG DANG THUN PAY LAY TSAM TE
undertake activities in harmony with my lineage.

KYON MED TSUN PAY RIG DI LA
This immaculate noble lineage,

NYOG PAR MI GYUR DE TAR JA
I would not act so that (this lineage) becomes stained.

LONG WAY CHAG DAR PHUNG PO LAY
Just as a blind man, from a heap of dirt,

JI TAR RIN CHEN NYED PA TAR
finds a precious jewel,

DE ZHIN JI ZHIG TAR TAY NAY
similarly, how fortunate it is

JANG CHUB SEM NI DAG LA KYE
that I have generated the awakening mind of Bodhichitta.

DAG GI DE RING KYOB PA THAM CHAD KYI
Today, with all my protectors as witnesses,

CHEN NGAR DRO WA DE SHEG NYID DANG NI
transmigrating beings are invited as guests

BAR DU DE LA DRON DU BO ZIN GYI
until they reach the same state as Sugatas

LHA DANG LHA MIN LA SOG GA WAR GYI
Gods, demi-gods and the rest rejoice

JANG CHUB SEM CHOG RINPOCHE
The precious supreme mind of awakening, Bodhicitta,

MA KYE PA NAM KYE GYUR CHIG
if unborn, may it arise,

KYE PA NYAM PA MED PA YANG
if generated, may it never diminish and

GONG NAY GONG DU PHEL WAR SHOG
may it continuously increase.

JANG CHUB SEM DANG MI DRAL ZHING
Never separated from the Bodhicitta,

JANG CHUB CHOD LA ZHOL WA DANG
dedicated to the conduct of Bodhi and

SANG GYE NAM GYI YONG ZUNG ZHING
being under the thorough care of all the Buddhas,

DUD KYI LAY NAM PONG WAR SHOG
may all activities of Mara be abandoned.

JANG CHUB SEM PA NAM KYI NI
May all the Bodhisattvas

DRO DON THUG LA GONG DRUB SHOG
accomplish their wishes to benefit beings.

GON PO YI NI GANG GONG PA
Whatever care and consideration of these protectors,

SEM CHEN NAM LANG DE JOR SHOG
may all sentient beings also receive them.

SEM CHEN THAM CHAD DE DANG DAN GYUR CHIG
May all sentient beings have happiness and joy.

NGAN DRO THAM CHAD TAG TU TONG WAR SHOG
May all the lower realms be permanently emptied.

JANG CHUB SEM PA GANG DAG SAR ZHUG PA
The Bodhisattvas who are on the bhumis,

DE DAG KUN GYI MON LAM DRUB PAR SHOG
May all their aspiration prayers be accomplished.
